Mocha, espresso, savory herbs and graphite are all woven together in the 2010 Le Serre Nuove dell'Ornellaia. Tightly wound, vibrant and beautifully delineated, the 2010 isn't as open or approachable young as it usually is. Instead, readers will have to be patient with the 2010. Cool veins of saline minerality support the vibrant finish. Even with all of the tension that is present today, there is also an element of silkiness in the tannin that will emerge more fully over time. The 2010 is 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot and 10% each Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc.

The 2010 Le Serre Nuove dell’Ornellaia shows off tons of concentration and sheer depth. Mocha, espresso, dark cherries and plums are some of the many notes that take shape in the glass. The 2010 is a decidedly powerful, virile wine endowed with considerable power. It will be interesting to see how the layers of flavor flesh out once the wine has been bottled. For now, the 2010 is a highly promising Serre Nuove. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2027. The 2009 vintage was not easy at Tenuta dell’Ornellaia because of the scorching hot summer. Readers may want to take a look at my video interview with Axel Heinz for more on the 2009 vintage. Importer: Folio Fine Wine Partners, Napa, CA; tel. (707) 256-2700
