BURGUNDY EN PRIMEUR 2024

BURGUNDY EN PRIMEUR 2024

A Vintage of Grace Amid Adversity

The 2024 vintage is one of precision, prettiness, elegance and charm. It has produced wines with plenty of grace, despite testing the most stoic of vignerons: a reminder that in Burgundy, adversity often begets beauty.

A Year of Hardship

Volumes, alas, tell a less cheerful story. After a year of relentless rain, mildew and localised hail, Burgundy finds itself facing one of its smallest harvests in decades. The cellars were conspicuously bare this year. In Chablis, some vineyards were completely written off, with Domaine Christian Moreau choosing to produce only one Grand Cru cuvée, a blend of everything he had left after losing 93% of their grand cru crop. Nuits-Saint-Georges and Chambolle-Musigny bore the brunt of this in the Cotes de Nuits, with volumes often down by 80%.

The Wine

Yet the wines that were made are lovely; it is a great vintage for whites, all with impeccable balance and a delicious salinity, and for the reds, a fantastic year of true Pinoté. In terms of pricing, we expect many growers to hold steady, while others may quietly raise prices to offset their meagre yields. In truth, after such a year, one could hardly blame them.

The 2024s are finely drawn, fragrant and classical in style, with alcohols rarely straying above 12.5 to 13%.

The year began, as so many of late seem to, with the sort of winter that would have made previous generations shake their heads.
