Wine Critic Reviews
The 2009 Barolo Via Nuova is the base Barolo and is executed in the most classic fashion. The wine started as a single-vineyard expression, but Chiara later decided to blend fruit from various sites to reflect the methods used to make traditional Barolo. The wine is elegant and streamlined with bright accents of wild berry, mint and licorice. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2028. Chiara Boschis is one of the protagonists of an exciting all-female group of producers in Barolo. She purchased E. Pira & Figli in 1981 from an old winemaking family that, sadly, finished its genetic line with no heirs after the death of its last male member. Chiara says she never wanted to change the winery’s name. Instead, she added her own in parentheses. All of her wines are simply stunning. Importer: Indigenous Selections, Fort Lauderdale, FL; tel. (this is an assemblage of six vineyards): Good full red. Raspberry, rose petal and spicy, nutty oak on the aromatic nose, with faint hints of leather and tar. Sweet, chewy red berry, nutty oak and leather flavors show good depth and life in the mouth. Finishes with substantial tongue-dusting tannins and a repeating oakiness. I would drink this Barolo over the next several years before it loses its fresh fruit and floral lift.
