The 1998 Chianti Classico Riserva Poggio delle Rose impresses for its overall balance and impeccable harmony. On paper, 1998 doesn't have the reputation of either 1996 or especially 1997, the most touted vintage of the decade. That doesn't stop it from being flat-out great. The integration of fruit, acidity, oak and tannin is simply marvelous. Sweet red berries, flowers, mint and leather are woven together in this effortless, gracious wine. This is a tremendous showing from an overlooked vintage.
